Coupling rings are adapters with a male filter thread on each side. They allow you to connect two lenses by their filter mounts. The lens that is furthest from the camera is mounted in reverse and acts as a powerful and well-corrected close up lens.
One end (male thread) of a coupling ring must have the same filter size (eg. ∅52mm) as main lens and the other end (male thread) the same filter size as the secondary lens.
Step up and down rings can be used to fit differently sized lenses.
