This cable release (or wired remote shutter release) has three functions:-
1) Half shutter-release - for focusing and taking light readings - eqivalent to pushing your on-camera shutter-release button down halfway.
2) Full shutter release - for taking the picture - like pushing your on-camera shutter release button all the way down.
3) Shutter release locking - for taking long "bulb" exposure  pictures - like pushing and holding down your on-camera shutter release, except this cable release locks in place so you can avoid the finger cramp.
